When learning isiZulu, things make a lot more sense when you start to identify patterns.A lot of nouns (objects or names) are based on verbs (actions). bhala -- write umbhali -- writer Some words are borrowed from other languages tafel -- Afrikaans for table itafula -- isiZulu for table And many words originate from the sound made by the object itself - it almost imitates the sound in its name. The idea behind the project is to create portraits of these well known figures to share some knowledge and insight around Zulu history and people, as well as showcase your artistic ability as a Zulu speaker/student/enthusiast. All you need to do is let us know that you want in, and we will send you a Zulu icon to illustrate. We'll even throw in some photos and biographical background to inspire you, and you are welcome to bounce ideas before you get started. You are not limited to 1 illustration - you can request 3 or even 5 icons! Here are some examples of what an illustrated portrait could look like...... but stay true to yourself as an artist!Your name will accompany whatever artwork you create, and we will be sure to acknowledge you each time the artwork is shared on social media. If the portraits are ever sold, the artists will be compensated. Here are some of the icons - let us know if we missed any...Make sure you check with us which icons are still available - each icon will only be illustrated once. Language is so much more than words. Let us live it.Humour is more than just something funny, amusing or entertaining. It's an escape from stress and pressures, it's a reflection or interpretation of reality, and it's a way of taking back control or making sense of something. 2016 seems to have been a rough year all round, so why don't we laugh it off with some Zulu-inspired humour! South Africans have always been champions at laughing at themselves... It's how we cope! Humour is where truth, interpretation, and circumstance intersect...
